Our outdoor education programme is as varied as it is extensive. Extra-curricular clubs and Friday Activity Hour offer opportunities to try activities such as caving, indoor climbing, sailing and kayaking.
Within the curriculum, all girls enjoy Outdoor Education trips once a year. Years 3 and 4 visit Mendip Outdoor Pursuits, where they try caving, rock climbing, open canoeing or kayaking, and also complete assault courses. Year 5 develop bushcraft skills with an overnight camp, whilst Year 6 visit Skern Lodge in North Devon for a whole week of adventure. Here, they experience activities that may include orienteering, abseiling, climbing, raft racing, high-ropes, and surfing (plus overnight bivvi-building).
Our overarching aim is not to just encourage girls to give everything a go, but for them to participate in those activities on a regular basis, build confidence, and develop skills in what they enjoy most. Here, girls don’t just say: “I’ve been caving”; they can confidently say: “I’m a caver.”
These activities and annual trips give the girls wonderful opportunities to actively develop their skills in ‘real life’ situations, guided by staff and instructors. Most importantly, they learn so much about themselves.
